Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipCinema is such an amazing space for people to gather, and the stories that we're putting on the screen are showing, not telling.
They're not didactic.
They're allowing more space for people to have their own thoughts.
It's the best format to create empathy with people with very different lived experiences, and it's the best way to talk about the real complexity of life.
Throughout our filmmaking process, we made a lot of efforts juxtaposing the three women in a way they complete each other and show this full picture of what women face in the process of industrialization.
We listened to these three main protagonists, and we really tried very hard to express their perspectives on this one scenario.
It was really when we met Moto when we realized that we really need to tell the story because it's rare to find someone who embodies and humanizes this state-led development model, and China's development philosophy.
China's growing influence on the Global South is one of the most important issues of our time.
It's one that's really misunderstood.
Sometimes willfully misunderstood and one that's often politicized, but one that people, regardless of where they are, should really understand better.
Made in Ethiopia is a rare chance for people to really learn about the inner workings of a big industrial zone and more importantly what development means to billions of people in the Global South.
